Altavista, Excite, Yahoo etc were search 1.0
Google was search 2.0, dominant since early 2000s
AI is search 3.0 at the moment.. no less artificial than the ones above and certainly not intelligent but very smart
The biggest problem with AI is, since it responds like a person, it makes people believe it knows what it is talking about, like a human would responding to a question, whereas it is still searching for the blue links and summarizing the top N that match the query.
Perplexity provides the blue links too which is a much better experience imo. It allows me to review what sources it relied on for the answer. Without that, who knows where it got its information.. You wouldn’t believe just any person answering your questions either, would you?
